Edifice, a source of architectural photographs, was founded with Gillian Darley in the late 1980s after the publication of the Dictionary of Ornament. We had taken virtually all the photographs for this and it became clear that it was interesting to continue working in this vein. It is a small specialist archive concentrating on building exteriors of all types and materials. Our greatest strength is architectural detail and domestic housing in all its ramifications; these have been widely reproduced in books and magazines. We have consistently photographed and recorded the ordinary and quirky as well as the spectacular.

The Freedoms of Suburbia by Paul Barker (Frances Lincoln, 2009) is illustrated with photographs specially commissioned from Edifice/Philippa Lewis
